Summary
The Executive Director of Camp Billings will oversee all aspects of camp operations to foster a safe, engaging, and financially sustainable environment for campers, staff, and families. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for growing camp programs, maintaining facilities, leading marketing and outreach efforts, and managing a dedicated staff. This position requires a visionary leader passionate about youth development and committed to the mission and values of Camp Billings. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Board President and relevant committees to support long-term goals and operational alignment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Overall Responsibilities
- Recruit, train, and supervise all full-time and seasonal staff, including summer personnel and property maintenance teams.
- Provide leadership for staff development, performance evaluations, and conflict resolution.
- Serve as the public face of Camp Billings, leading all parent communications and fostering trust, clarity, and connection before, during, and after each season.
- Lead marketing and outreach initiatives, including website content, social media, newsletters, camp fairs, and alumni engagement.
- Manage camp facilities and grounds in coordination with caretakers, ensuring safety, maintenance, and long-term infrastructure planning.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including those from the Vermont Department of Health and the American Camp Association.
- Develop and oversee the annual budget, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term financial sustainability.
- Implement crisis management and risk mitigation protocols across all operations.
- Lead strategic planning, fundraising, and partner with the Board of Trustees on capital projects.
- Advance Camp Billings’ mission and visibility through strong leadership and community presence.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the success of the organization.
Summer Camp Responsibilities
- Lead camper recruitment and retention initiatives to maintain strong enrollment.
- Support and enhance program development to ensure a diverse and engaging range of activities.
- Serve as a mentor and resource for camp leadership staff, ensuring programs align with Camp Billings’ values and traditions.
- Participate in crisis management and serve as the final authority on staff and camper disciplinary issues.
- Stay up to date on youth development best practices and incorporate them into camp programming.
- Act as the main point of contact for Camp Billings Alumni and Board of Directors.
Facilities & Rentals Responsibilities
- Support off-season rental use of camp facilities, including occasional coordination for retreats or events.
- Collaborate with property staff to ensure facilities remain well-maintained and aligned with Camp Billings’ mission.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years in a leadership role with staff management experience, ideally within a camp or youth-focused organization.
- Prior experience at an overnight summer camp is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of child development, outdoor education, and best practices in youth programming and commitment to ongoing professional development in youth development, safety, and inclusive programming.
- Demonstrated success in marketing, communications, or enrollment strategy, particularly in roles focused on audience growth, program promotion, or community engagement.
- Experience in nonprofit fundraising is highly preferred.
- Solid financial management skills, including budgeting and strategic planning.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
- Availability to be on-site at Camp Billings in Fairlee, Vermont during the summer season (June–August) and as needed in the off-season (September–May).

Work Environment & Physical Demands
The Executive Director will work in a rustic summer camp setting with frequent outdoor activities in varying weather conditions. The role requires physical mobility, including walking, standing, sitting, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. The Executive Director may also need to operate motorized vehicles and equipment. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities.
This is a full-time, exempt position requiring flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, particularly during the operational season.
Off-season work may be performed remotely, though periodic in-person presence in Fairlee, Vermont may be required for key planning, events, or facility needs.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $85,000 – $105,000 annually, based on experience.
- Additional bonus potential based on the achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs) to be mutually agreed upon by the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
